After narrowly losing to Glasgow 7-5 all the way back in October, the St Andrews team was keen to put one over on their opponents to join them on 3 wins out of 4 and share the top-spot in the league table. An equally determined Glasgow outfit brought an unprecedented number of travelling fans – at least 3 – hoping that their support would spur them on to victory in this crucial fixture. Regardless, the Saints singles players all put in gutsy performances to give the home side an early 4-0 lead. Sarah in particular impressed in her comfortable win over the player that she’d narrowly lost to in the reverse fixture. Jess and Nick both battled to win three-setters despite losing first ends, and Rory put in a trademark consistent performance, making only a couple of unforced errors in a straightforward win. Jess and Sarah then pulled off a hard-fought victory in their levels despite the challenges of playing in front of the raucous Glasgow crowd, with Nick and Rory also winning their doubles. With only the mixed to go, the score stood at 6-2, meaning that one more rubber would win the match and secure the points. Having already won both their singles and doubles, Rory and Sarah teamed up to secure the points for the home side with Jamie and Lucy winning their game soon after, leading to the final score of 8-4. Shout out to Nikki who filled in at the very last minute due to Morven’s injury – overall an excellent team win that has cemented the 1sts as title contenders.
